The rules that apply to your organization
Different laws set different deadlines, but they point to the same standard: WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Each page lists the dates and links the sources.
State and local government
Cities, counties, state agencies, transit authorities and special districts now have a fixed federal deadline for web accessibility.
April 26, 2027 for public entities serving 50,000 people or more
Colleges and universities
Public colleges and universities fall under the same Title II rule as state government, and course content counts.
April 26, 2027 for public institutions in jurisdictions of 50,000 people or more
Healthcare providers
Hospitals, clinics and health plans that receive federal funding through HHS have their own web accessibility deadline.
May 11, 2027 for recipients with 15 or more employees
Online stores
Online stores can face an ADA website lawsuit at any time, and an accessibility widget on the site has not kept stores out of court.
No fixed deadline: lawsuits can be filed at any time
Businesses selling in the EU
If you sell to customers in the European Union, the European Accessibility Act applies to your online store and many other digital services, wherever your company is based.
In force since June 28, 2025
